Pain Connection Receives Governor's Citation at Gala Fifth Anniversary Luncheon

Pain Connection held its Fifth Anniversary Luncheon and Award Ceremony Honoring Members who have Recreated Themselves and the Donors who have Made It All Possible, on Sunday, October 10, 2004 at the Classic Residence by Hyatt in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The luncheon was a huge success and made a lasting impression on all. The Honorary Speaker, Secretary Jean Roesser, Head of Maryland's Department of Aging, presented Pain Connection with a Governor's Citation for outstanding service to chronic pain sufferers, their families and to the citizens of the State of Maryland. Secretary Roesser also talked about legislative matters regarding pain, the patients' bill of rights and the new Maryland State Advisory Council on Pain Management. She stated that the population of Maryland is gradually aging with the result that the number of chronic pain sufferers is also likely to grow. The emcee, Hillary Howard, Channel 9 Weather Reporter, did a remarkable job with her vivacious personality.

Gwenn Herman, Founder and Director of Pain Connection, talked about the importance of educating the public about chronic pain issues and presented the awards to the honorees, donors and volunteers. Honorees Martha Leonard, Jon Greenberg, Geoff Manifold and John Mannes made heartwarming speeches about their abilities to cope with pain through creative ways that they have personally developed. There was not a dry eye in the house and afterwards many guests were heard saying, "I had no idea how chronic pain affects people".

Joan and Norris Hekimian from The Phase Foundation, a local Potomac Foundation, were presented with an award for their generosity, faith and support. An award was also presented to Christopher Reeve and the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation for their wonderful work in helping others and their generous support of Pain Connection. To conclude the celebration there was a raffle drawing with 25 prizes donated from local businesses.

Mission Statement

There are fifty million Americans suffering from chronic pain who are not receiving the treatment they need. Many fall between the cracks in their own private health insurance, workman's compensation, and disability benefits. Others are helpless because of a lack of insurance.

Pain Connection® is a 501(c)(3) not for profit human health service agency that provides a monthly support group, information and referrals, community outreach and education, website and newsletter. Pain Connection plans to establish an outreach center which will provide counseling, support groups and seminars, 24 hour hotline, library with Internet access, training program, case management, advocacy, and transportation for people suffering from chronic pain. These services will improve the quality of life, offer a chance for rehabilitation, decrease the sense of isolation this population experiences and enable the chronic pain sufferer to take control of his/her condition and treatment and maintain independence..

Tribute to Christopher Reeve

A few years ago, Pain Connection received a Quality of Life Grant from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Foundation Center, which helped further develop our chronic pain support groups. On October 10th we celebrated our 5th Anniversary and had invited Christopher and Dana Reeve, but at that time they were unable to attend. At the luncheon we honored Christopher for his courage, strength, goodness, his hard work to help others and most of all his vision which also gave hope to chronic pain sufferers, not knowing he was laying in the hospital surrounded by his family and loved ones, dying from an infection.

The award was sent to the Reeve family letting them know of the many lives that Christopher touched due to his determination, hope and generosity. We send our deepest condolences. Christopher did walk above us all and he is now.
